The history of Giulianova has its roots in 1470 when Giulio Antonio Acquaviva, Duke of Atri, laid its foundations with the aim of providing a new home for the inhabitants of the Roman Castrum Novum, destroyed a few years earlier. Fundamental to that period were the defense towers and fortifications that can be seen along the entire perimeter of the city. Two of those towers - the tower called "Il Bianco" and the tower of "Porta Napoli" - are still in excellent condition and clearly visible today. The ancient historic center is also enriched with sites of religious importance such as the church of S. Flaviano (15th century), the church of S. Antonio (16th century), the Sanctuary of the Madonna dello Splendore (16th century), the church of Misericordia (16th century), as well as some magnificent buildings from various eras. In modern Giulianova Lido, on the edge of the Adriatic State Road, stands the small church of Santa Maria a Mare (first half of the 14th century), with a splendid 14th-century portal that, in the lunette of the round arch, shows a Madonna and Child in high relief.
